Zwei Jahre haben wir mit großer Spannung auf Star Wars: Die letzten Jedi gewartet, hier nun unsere Sicht auf den Mittelteil der Sequel-Trilogie:
Mut im Möglichen

Wer die Marketingkampagne um Star Wars: Die letzten Jedi verfolgt hat, konnte ein Element des Films nicht übersehen: Die Porgs. Klein, putzig und mit süßen Quäk-Lauten ausgestattet wirkten sie wie ein klassisches Merchandiseprodukt, nur dafür geschaffen, in möglichst hohen Stückzahlen an kleine und große Kinder verteilt zu werden. Im Film hingegen, und das sagt eine Menge über ihn aus, sind sie nicht bloß niedliche Schaufensterdekoration, sondern eines der Elemente, die Regisseur Rian Johnson nicht nur auf Lukes Insel geschickt einsetzt, um die an ihn von seinem phantasielosen Vorgänger übergebenen, leblosen Felsbrocken zu glaubhaften, plastisch ausgearbeiteten Star-Wars-Welten weiterzuentwickeln.
Diese Gabe, die jener Vorgänger schmerzlich vermissen ließ, dem zu den endlosen Spielarten von Star Wars außer Wüste und Irland gar nichts einfiel, erfüllt Johnsons Film in allen Facetten mit Leben und Menschlichkeit, und nirgends ist das bemerkenswerter als bei jenen als uninteressante Schaufensterpuppen mit Superfähigkeiten eingeführten Figuren, die unter Johnsons Händen zu auf Normalmaß zurechtgestutzten Persönlichkeiten werden dürfen, deren Entwicklung tatsächliche Spannungselemente mit sich bringt. So bekommt die als waschechte Mary Sue gestartete Rey endlich einmal auf die Finger, während Fliegermegaass Poe Dameron die Grenzen seiner Actionman-Attitüde schmerzhaft vor Augen geführt werden. Beiden Figuren tut das richtig, richtig gut, dürfen sie sich doch endlich, endlich als fehlbare Nicht-Superhelden beweisen, anstatt als bloßes Klischee zu verenden.
Zauberei kann man allerdings auch von Johnson nicht erwarten: Nachdem ihm ein Trümmerhaufen übergeben wurde, war es ihm verständlicherweise nicht möglich, daraus Paläste zu errichten, was insbesondere in der Finn-Rose-Geschichte unübersehbar ist: Dort, wie auch beispielhaft am Kurzauftritt von Maz Kanata, merkt man ganz besonders deutlich, dass Johnson im Grunde nicht wusste, was er mit diesen an sich überflüssigen Figuren anfangen sollte, sodass er sie entweder nur als Gimmick einsetzt oder sie einmal quer durch die Galaxis jagt, um ihnen nur irgendetwas zu tun zu geben. Etliche seiner 150 Minuten Laufzeit verschwendet der Film damit in einem effektreichen, aber ergebnisarmen Katz-und-Maus-Spiel, das neben einigen interessanten Schauwerten vor allem überflüssige Längen mit sich bringt.
Ebenfalls keine Wundertaten kann Johnson auf einem Feld leisten, bei dem der Sequelauftakt gelinde gesagt vage, um nicht zu sagen: komplett unverständlich blieb. Zwar liefert Johnson bereits in seinem Lauftext mehr Informationen zum Stand der Galaxis als sein Vorgänger in dessen gesamten Film, doch wirklich weit kommt auch Johnson damit nie. Was nun wirklich Sache ist, wie die Gesamtlage entstanden ist oder welches politische, militärische oder gar gesellschaftliche Potential in den verschiedenen Gruppierungen steckt, bleibt insbesondere auf der Seite der Bösen komplett offen. Umso klarer sind dafür, und das ist eine der vielen Stärken von Johnsons Werk, die Probleme der Guten, die nach dem erfolgreichen Einsatz des Starkillers weitestgehend mit leeren Händen dastehen. Und nun verzweifelt nach dem suchen, von dem schon Cassian Andor und Jyn Erso wussten, dass es entscheidend ist im Krieg der Sterne: Hoffnung. Denn Rebellion entsteht aus Hoffnung.
Und wie in Rogue One auf Scarif um eine unmögliche Hoffnung gekämpft wurde, werden auch in Die letzten Jedi verzweifelte Kämpfe geführt, um jenen Funken zu bewahren und zu neuem Strahlen zu führen, der die Galaxis gegen die Erste Ordnung erhellen soll. Der Hoffnungsträger des Vorgängerfilms erweist sich dabei, wie in den Trailern bereits angedeutet, als äußerst unwillig, seine Legende in den Dienst der guten Sache zu stellen, sodass es – wie schon beim Wechsel von Yoda und Obi-Wan zu ihrem in diesem Punkt allzu ähnlichen Schüler – abermals einer neuen Generation überlassen ist, die nötigen Kämpfe zu führen und das Gute im Bösen zu sehen.
Genau hier kann der Film seine Stärken ausspielen, genau hier überzeugt er durch seine sich selbst ernstnehmende Sicht auf die Hybris der Macht, die Anziehungskraft der dunklen Seite, die Dynamik zwischen Meistern und Schülern und der Faszination eines Abkömmlings der Skywalkers für ein Mädchen aus der Wüste. Wie gut dieser Film und diese Trilogie hätten werden können, wären sie mit mehr Verstand und Verständnis für den Krieg der Sterne begonnen worden, lässt sich am Spiel von Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver und Daisy Ridley zumindest erahnen.
Und unterm Strich? Leistet Johnson angesichts seiner miserablen Ausgangssituation fast schon Übermenschliches: Wo vorher banale Abkupferei war, ist nun klug variiertes Reimen, wo lieblose Abziehbilder waren, sind dreidimensionale Figuren, wo irländische Leblosigkeit war, sind Porgs, Kristallfüchse und Weltraumpferde und wo die Feigheit war, den Krieg der Sterne zu erweitern und in neue Dimensionen vorzutreiben, ist nun Mut. Sehr, sehr viel Mut, der in Fragen der Macht und ihrer Möglichkeiten fast schon tollkühne Ausmaße annimmt und die Saga dauerhaft vor große Herausforderungen stellen wird. Dass Johnsons Vorgänger und Nachfolger mit diesem Material auch nur ansatzweise klarkommen wird, ist in meinen Augen so gut wie ausgeschlossen, sodass diese Trilogie so erbärmlich enden dürfte, wie sie begonnen hat. Zumindest dieser Mittelteil aber ist ein bemerkenswertes, diskussionswürdiges, absonderliches und einzigartiges Stück Krieg der Sterne. Genau wie seine Porgs.
Neue Wege der Macht
Zur Einleitung in diese Filmbesprechung von Star Wars: Die letzten Jedi möchte ich ein paar Worte vorwegschicken.

Zunächst – ganz wichtig – diese Besprechung ist zu 99% spoilerfrei. Das 1% lasse ich mir offen, da jemand vielleicht auch nur Ansätze von Hinweisen als Spoiler verstehen könnten – ohne die dürfte eine angemessene Besprechung nicht möglich sein.
Außerdem würde mich als Leser dieser Filmbesprechung interessieren, wie der Autor denn zu Das Erwachen der Macht steht, um die Meinung hier besser einordnen zu können. Da möchte ich mich aber kurz fassen. Das Erwachen der Macht hat neue Figuren eingeführt, meiner Meinung nach tlw. ziemlich interessant und gelungen, tlw. blieben neue Figuren blass. Inhaltlich war mir der Film zu wenig durchdacht – ich würde sogar so weit gehen, dass sich die Autoren des Drehbuchs, J.J. Abrams und Lawrence Kasdan, wenige bis gar keine Gedanken über die Zeit zwischen den Trilogien gemacht haben. Herausgekommen ist in vielerlei Hinsicht ein Aufguss bekannter Themen und ein Setting ohne Hintergründe oder Erklärungen. Feige und uninspiriert könnte man das nennen.
Nun zu Die letzten Jedi: Der Film mag vieles sein, feige ist aber nicht. Ganz und gar nicht. Rian Johnson beschreitet hier mutig neue Pfade und entwickelt die Saga damit weiter, wie ich es nicht mehr erwartet hätte. Und egal, wie man zu diesen Entwicklungen steht, ob man sie gut findet oder nicht, man muss ihm einfach zu Gute halten, dass er mehr will als einen weiteren Aufguss von Altbekanntem.
Gleichzeitig darf man Johnson attestieren, dass er Star Wars verstanden hat und sich daher das Meiste, wenn auch nicht 100% alles tatsächlich nach Star Wars anfühlt und sich gut in diese Galaxis einbettet.
Ebenfalls sollte positiv herausgestellt werden, dass Die letzten Jedi es schafft, gegebene Elemente – seien es Figuren oder Schauplätze – zu nehmen und besser zu machen. Ahch-To ist nicht mehr nur diese irische Insel, Poe Dameron wird zu mehr als einem Fliegerass und auch Rey oder Kylo gewinnen an Tiefe. Doch das ist nur eine Seite der Medaille. Die andere ist, dass man stellenweise merkt, dass Johnson mit einigen ihm vorgegebenen Elementen nicht allzu viel anzufangen wusste und diese dann auch ziemlich schnell abhakt. Das ist nicht unbedingt schlimm, zeigt aber Schwächen auf, mit der die Sequel-Trilogie zu kämpfen hat.
Selbstverständlich hat Die letzten Jedi nicht nur bereits bekannte Figuren oder Planeten zu bieten. Mit Crait gibt es einen neuen Planeten, der eben nicht wie Hoth wirkt, sondern tatsächlich frisch, exotisch und aufregend. Canto Bight hat tatsächlich sowas wie Prequel-Flair, was mich besonders gefreut hat. Die neuen Figuren sind größtenteils interessant geraten, können ihr Potential im Film allerdings nur begrenzt ausspielen. Hier ist vor allem Benicio del Toros DJ zu nennen, der vielleicht auch das „Pech“ hat, im aus meiner Sicht uninteressantesten Handlungsbogen mitzuwirken.
Während also der Handlungsbogen mit Finn und Rose eher nebensächlich wirkt und schließlich sogar in einem ziemlich konstruierten Finale mündet, sind es so ziemlich alle Momente mit Rey, Luke oder Kylo in denen der Film so richtig überzeugen kann. Lukes Reaktion auf Rey dürfte so niemand vorhergesehen haben, und so bieten die Ahch-To-Szenen nicht nur einige Überraschungen, sondern auch genug Material, das die Saga im Normalfall für die nächsten Jahre stark beeinflussen sollte.
Mit einer Laufzeit von über 150 Minuten hat der Film mit ein, zwei Längen zu kämpfen, die glücklicherweise aber nicht so lang werden, dass sie wirklich stören. 150 Minuten – genug Zeit, um Antworten auf all die Fragen zu liefern, mit denen uns Das Erwachen der Macht zurückgelassen hat? Ja und nein. Es gibt Antworten, aber sowohl auf Figurenebene als auch bezogen auf die politische oder gesellschaftliche Lage der Galaxis bleiben viele Fragen unbeantwortet – und die Hoffnung, darauf in Episode IX noch Antworten zu erhalten, ist mehr als gering. Das ist in einigen Fällen zu verschmerzen, in anderen Fällen ist es eher schmerzhaft.
Dass Rian Johnson, wie eingangs erwähnt, Star Wars verstanden hat, zeigt sich auch visuell. Hier gibt es an Die letzten Jedi überhaupt nichts auszusetzen. Es gibt eine Vielzahl an Einstellungen, die sich uns Fans fest in die Köpfe einbrennen werden. Und auch musikalisch schafft es der Film, dass Star-Wars-Gefühl aufleben zu lassen. Es gibt genügend stellen, in denen John Williams glänzen und deutlich vordergründiger agieren kann, als es im ersten Teil der Sequels noch der Fall war. Williams spielt hier sowohl mit Themen aus der Klassischen Trilogie, hier sei vor allem das Princess Leia Theme genannt, aber auch in Das Erwachen der Macht neu eingeführte Themen werden aufgegriffen und prominent eingesetzt. Neue, zumindest nach dem ersten Schauen eingängige Themen waren jedoch nicht auszumachen.
Mein Fazit: Unterm Strich bleibt ein emotional bewegender und fesselnder Star-Wars-Film, der nicht davor zurückscheut, ausgetretene Pfade zu verlassen und neue Dinge zu probieren. Im Fandom wird der Film für reichlich Diskussionen und sicherlich viele unterschiedliche Meinungen sorgen. Mit Blick in die Zukunft betrachtet hat Lucasfilm mit Rian Johnson einen Mann an der Angel, der mit seiner neuen Trilogie für eine frische und sichere Zukunft des Franchises sorgen wird. Schade, dass er vorher nicht noch die Sequel-Trilogie beendet.

Was ich nicht ganz so sehe wie offenbar viele hier: Luke wird nicht beschädigt! Es war doch nach TFA klar, dass was schief gelaufen ist mit Ben Solo. Es ist für mich absolut nachvollziehbar, dass Luke den Glauben an sich selbst und die Jedi verloren hat und/oder nichts mehr mit dem Ganzen zu tun haben will. Er ist verbittert und diese Tragik lässt sich meiner Meinung nach gut nachempfinden. Er war bestürzt über sich selbst und die Erkenntnis, dass was immer er auch gemacht hätte, er hätte Ben verloren. Wie das alles mit Snoke kam und auch über dessen Herkunft werden wir vielleicht mehr erfahren in einem Film, der diese Ereignisse beleuchtet. Auch am Ende ist Luke kein Feigling, wie ich teilweise in Kommentaren lesen musste im Internet. Noch weniger wird er herabgestuft. Ganz im Gegenteil: Er ist so mächtig, dass er diesen Meditationstrick anwenden kann, um letztendlich seinen Freunden zu helfen. Ich hatte eher das Gefühl, wow was ist Luke für ein mächtiger Jedi. Er hat es ja auch selbst gesagt im Film. Soll er dem Widerstand helfen indem er mit seinem Schwert herum wütet? Nein, viel cleverer! Für mich hat der Film einen gebrochenen Mann gezeigt, der natürlich erst einmall nicht mehr der strahlende Held sein kann nach den Ereignissen. Am Ende kam er dann als alle überragender Held zurück. Hatte seine Meinung geändert und half dem Widerstand. Am Ende war Luke, sein Gesichtsausdruck, seine Entschlossenheit zurück. Ich fand auch die Szene, in der er sein Schwert wegwarf am Anfang nicht lustig (wie mancher im Kino) sondern bestürzend und unterstreichend wie fertig er mit der ganzen Sache ist. Vielleicht wäre es noch cooler gewesen, er hätte es einfach fallen lassen oder es weit weg geworfen.
Mein Hauptkritikpunkt an der ST ist, dass die alten Helden zuviel Platz bekommen.

@ Allgemeine Reaktionen auf TLJ:
Die Diskrepanz zwischen Kritikern und Publikum ist bemerkenswert. So ganz begreifen kann ich sie nicht. Wer den Film ebenfalls ablehnt, wird sich natürlich bestätigt fühlen. Aber abgesehen davon, dass ich diese Sehnsucht nach Bestätigung und die damit verbundene Nutzung von Scores und dergleichen als handfeste Argumentationsgrundlage kritisch sehe, denke ich, dass man sich von der "Masse" und ihrer Neigung zu Extremen nicht täuschen lassen sollte. Man könnte vielleicht meinen, dass viele Leute jetzt "erwacht" sind und endlich erkennen, wie schlecht alles ist. Das sehe ich aber anders. Die heftigen Negativreaktionen auf TLJ sind genauso irrational und maßlos wie der Hype um seinen Vorgänger.
Grundsätzlich beobachte ich mit Sorge, wie der öffentliche Diskurs seit einiger Zeit geführt wird, wir sehr er sich von Oberflächlichkeiten leiten lässt und das Maß verliert. Nicht nur beim Film, sondern in vielen gesellschaftlichen Bereichen, auch der Politik. Die Bereitschaft, mal unabhängig von rottentomatoes, reddit oder metacritic die eigene Birne zu bemühen, ist nicht gerade sehr hoch. Ich meine damit nicht speziell SWU, sondern ganz allgemein die heutige Art der Rezeption. Und es ist auch nicht nur SW, das davon betroffen ist. Warum kann man einen Film nicht einfach nur gut oder vielleicht auch nur okay finden, warum gibt es so oft diese weit auseinandergehende Schere zwischen "Geil" und "Katastrophe"? Dieses Changieren zwischen Orgasmus und Todestrieb ist doch nicht mehr normal. Ich mag Seiten wie rottentomatoes, ich halte mich immer wieder dort auf, sie bieten einem einen interessanten Überblick. Aber bitte, die Grundlage für kritische Analysen und Argumentationen sind immer noch die Filme, und die Legitimität und argumentative Stärke der eigenen Sichtweise entscheidet sich nicht danach, wie sehr oder wie wenig sie mit den entsprechenden Internetseiten übereinstimmt.

Politisch bringt auch TLJ die Saga nicht wirklich weiter, das ist richtig. Es gibt zwar Variationen zum OT-Setting, aber die werden zu wenig unterstrichen, um der ST so eine Eigenständigkeit zu verleihen, wie sie in der PT vorhanden war. Man könnte hier der Fairness halber vielleicht noch die finanziellen Verwicklungen mit der reichen Oberschicht nennen.
In Machtfragen finde ich aber, dass TLJ durchaus neue und eindringliche Aspekte in die Saga bringt. Die Idee der Balance ist weder neu noch revolutionär, aber sie wird immerhin in den Fokus gerückt und definiert, das kann man schon als Verdienst verbuchen. Aber überleg mal, was der Film über Luke in der Saga etabliert: Luke kann - zu Lebzeiten! - ein Abbild seines sterbliches Körpers an andere Orte in der Galaxis schicken. TLJ hebt Luke auf eine neue Stufe, was absolut notwendig und daher lobenswert ist. Es zeigt, dass Machtphilosophie und Machtnutzer sich immer wieder weiterentwickeln können, so wie es ja auch schon in der Lucas-Saga mit Qui-Gon und später Obi-Wan und Yoda deutlich wurde.

Stimme dir bei vielen zu. Im ganzen betrachtet, der story mit luke, snoke usw. hat meiner meinung nach oft nur das fingerspitzengefühl gefehlt. Ich denke ein kompromiss für beide fanlager wäre möglich gewesen. Evtl. einfach manche tode in episode 9 verschieben.
Ich denke es war jedem klar, dass sich disney der großen drei entledigen möchte. Denke nur das timing war etwas unpassend.
Auserdem lese ich sehr oft von "mutig". Wäre es nicht wirklich mutig gewesen, ben im thronroom rey töten zu lassen? Finn den heldentot am ende zu geben?

Hmmm. Ein paar szenen waren sicherlich nett anzuschauen. Die gigantischen schiffe, die sternenzerstörer aus sicht des planetens. Das mit yoda war sicher auch nicht verkehrt. Da störte ich mich nur in der ersten perspektive. Danach sah er grandios aus.
Die musik beim flug durch das casino war auch sehr passend.

Zuerst fand ich es ja übrigens nicht so dolle, dass Obi Wan und Anakin nicht auch im Hintergrund als Machtgeister standen, aber jetzt... hat es klick gemacht.
Wäre einfach ein zu dicker Spoiler gewesen, Sebastian Shaw rein zu produzieren und den Fans zu zeigen: Freut Euch auf die kommende Veröffentlichung der Original Versionen
Das wird dann einfach in Episode IX nachgeholt, wenn die Originale bereits in UHD aufm Disney Streaming Dienst laufen.

"Die Filmanalyse" hat sich ebenfalls TLJ angenommen, und wie gewohnt bietet sie Perspektiven, die es wert sind, gehört zu werden. Der Mann spielte hier vor einer ganzen Weile schon einmal kurz eine Rolle und stieß wegen Erscheinungsbild und Habitus teils direkt auf Ablehnung. Ich folge ihm aber schon etwas länger und finde, dass er etwas zu sagen hat.

Die Filmanalyse fand ich zunächst auch sehr komisch, mittlerweile schaue ich den auch häufiger da er wirklich eine ganz eigene Art hat, Filme zu bewerten und zu besprechen. Gerade in dieser Analyse zu Die Letzten Jedi, bringt er ein paar echt gute Punkte über die man zweimal nachdenken sollte.

Ich denke das wir es hier auch ein wenig mit dem immer stärker werdenden Einfluß der You-Tuber zu tun haben. Der Film war noch nicht mal draußen, und sie haben halbgare Spoiler-Frei Reviews rausgehauen wo sie sich größtenteils enttäuscht zeigen. Spätere Kritiken wie zb. die von Robert Hoffmann fallen dann komischerweise immer positiver aus. Ich denke das darf man auf keinen Fall unterschätzen welchen Einfluß auf die öffentliche Meinung, diese Leute mittlerweile haben.

Tatsächlich finde ich in diesem Fall, dass "die Filmanalyse" hier vollkommen schief läuft. Manchmal kommt es mir vor als wenn sich der Gute den Konsens der Kritiken durchliest (in diesem Fall "veränderung") und dann genau für das Gegenteil plädiert (in diesem Fall "stillstand") Ich glaube nicht, dass es sich um einen Stillstand handelt. Wir sehen eben die Meistergeneration die tatsächlich versucht die Schülergeneration abzulehnen. Luke ist doch vollkommen klar, dass der Orden der Jedi aufhören muss. Er ist der letzte Jedi und wählt am Ende des Films den Tod. Die einzige Handlung die er noch vollbringt ist das Sicherstellen des Überlebens seiner Schwester. Er ist davon überzeugt, dass der Weg de "jedihaften" Überheblichkeit falsch ist (und gezeigt wird uns das noch einmal eindrucksvoll an Snoke). Während des Filmes wandelt er sich als Charakter nur in der Hinsicht, als das er sich vorher noch nicht 100% sicher war. Yoda sagt ihm dann, dass es okay ist die Jedi auszulöschen - mit diesem Segen tut er dann das Notwendige. Und mit dieser Erkenntnis der nicht notwenidgkeit des selbst, schafft er dann die absolute Beherrschung des Selbst und erreicht im Gegensatz zu allen Jedi zuvor die Fähigkeit Geist und Körper völlig zu trennen. Alles was nun nach ihm folgt kann nicht mehr als Jedi bezeichnet werden. Sillstand - Nein!

Betrachtet dies doch als Ergänzung, nicht als vollumfassende Kritik. Es handelt sich um bewusst ideolgiekritische Analysen. Die decken naturgemäß nicht alles ab, sind deshalb aber nicht gleich wertlos und schon garnicht banal. Das ist es, was ich mit sachlicher Antwort meine. Die Beziehungen zwischen Meistern und Schülern spielen eine zentrale Rolle in TLJ und sind auch garnicht so schlecht ausgearbeitet. Man kann also durchaus gegenteiliger Meinung sein, solange man keinen absoluten und universellen Anspruch verfolgt.

Robert Hoffmann schätze ich z.B. durchaus, weil er einfach nüchtern und optimistisch veranlagt ist. Auf youtube wird ansonsten ja sehr viel darauf geachtet, das es viele Klicks gibt, und die bekommt man eher mit reißerischen Beiträgen ("Why the last jedi destroys the complete franchise" oder etwas in der Art. Von meiner Seite gibt es dafür nur pure Ignoranz).

Dein letzter Kommentar trifft genau den Punkt, weshalb der Film die Zuschauer spaltet. Es ist die Darstellung von Luke Skywalker. Für diejenigen, die weder zur PT noch zur OT eine Verbindung haben funktionert der von RJ erfundene Luke Skywalker. Aber für diejenigen, die TLJ als 8. Teil einer gesamten Saga betrachten, ist die Entwicklung von Luke Skywalker nicht nachvollziehbar.
Am Ende von ROTJ ist Luke bereit eher zu sterben, als seinen Vater zu töten.Es ist seine Liebe die seinen Vater bekehrt. Mit anderen Worten Luke ist der Held, der für andere da ist und sich jederzeit opfert, um den Frieden in der Galaxis herzustellen. Ohne viel Erklärung ist er das in TLJ nicht mehr. Luke wird zum Zyniker, Feigling und Egoisten. Glaubt er in ROTJ als einziger an das Gute in seinem Vater, überlegt er später seinen Neffen im Schlaf zu ermorden, weil er Dunkelheit in ihm spürt. RJ vermeidet es, diesen Gesinnungswandel TLJ deutlich zu erklären. Anstatt seinem Neffen zu helfen, die Dunkelheit zu verstehen und ihr zu widerstehen, fördert er unweigerlich Kylos Abkehr von der hellen Seiter der Macht. Für die Jedi hat Luke nur noch zynisches Geschwätz übrig ohne aber konkrete Antworten zu liefern, ohne dem Jeditum eine neue Richtung zu geben. Sein Verschwinden ist letztendlich eher ein sinnloses Davonlaufen. Anstatt seiner Schwester im Kampf gegen das Böse zu helfen, will er lieber Säugetiere melken. Luke sagt selbst, dass er auf diesen Planeten gekommen ist, um zu sterben. Er hatte nie vor, einen neuen Weg zu finden. Das ist dann wohl der Höhepunkt des Egoismus.
RJ hat sich zu wenig mit Luke Skywalker beschäftigt. Ansonsten wäre ihm aufgefallen, dass JJ Abrams Luke bereits ganz anders charakterisiert hat. Luke hat eine Karte hinterlassen, die zu ihm führt. Übrigens dreht sich um diese Sternkarte TFA. Diesen Umstand übersieht RJ gänzlich. Der Luke Skywalker aus EP 8 hat nichts mehr mit dem Helden der OT gemeinsam.
Für alle, die auf solche Details keinen Wert legen, ist TLJ vielleicht ein toller Film. Aber für alle, die auf solche Details Wert legen, funktioniert der Film und damit auch die gesamte ST nicht.

Das mit Robert Hoffmann war keinesfalls negativ gemeint, denn auch für mich ist er einer der besten You-Tube Filmkritiker der auch mal einfach einen Film ein paar Tage Sacken lässt, bevor er eine Kritik zum besten gibt. Seine Kritik zu die letzten jedi kam erst am 14. raus, die der meisten anderen You-Tuber hauten aber direkt nach Kino Gang am 12. ihre Meinung raus (eine Besprechung findet sogar während einer Autofahrt statt) und da merkt man schon irgendwie, dass die sich noch gar nicht richtig mit dem Film beschäftigen konnten, sondern einfach losgeredet haben ohne überhaupt drüber nachzudenken. Manch einer rudert jetzt ja auch zurück, was die Glaubhaftigkeit dieser Leute in meinen Augen nicht gerade beflügelt.

Mache es dir bitte nicht so einfach. Mein Vater, meine Freundin und ein Kollege von mir mir sind alle seit 25-30 Jahren große (Luke) Fans und sind alle von TLJ und seiner Darstellung begeistert.
Es ist klar dass hier ein mutiger und unerwarteter Schritt mit der Figur gemacht wurde, der unangenehm und hart seien soll. Er zwingt alle aus der Komfortzone. Aber ich sehe keine Grundlage dafür das ganze als objektiv unlogisch oder unpassend zu definieren.
Edit: TFA sagt nie dass Luke eine Karte hinterlassen hat um gefunden zu werden. Er hat sich auf die Suche nach den Ursprüngen der Jedi gemacht und Lor war ein Archäologe und Machtgläubiger, der ihm half den Weg der Urjedi zu verfolgen. Es war also mehr eine Karte zum ersten Jedi Tempel (wo gerade Luke ist).
Und selbst wenn dann hat Luke sicher am Anfang seiner Reise gedacht oder gehofft, dass der Tempel eine Lösung oder einen Antwort bereit hält. Offensichtlich war es nicht der Fall weshalb er sich dann entschlossen hat der Galaxie ohne Lösung nicht mehr unter die Augen treten zu wollen.
Das ganze war keine Schnitzeljagd "Wer mich findet, der wird zum nächsten Oberjedi. Das macht insofern auch TFA schon klar, da Luke so ein Spiel abbrechen würde wenn die Republik zerbröselt oder sein alter Freund stirbt.

@darth mongo: Sehe ich anders. Ich kann es sehr wohl nachvollziehen, dass Luke den Glauben an alles auf was er vertraute verloren hat. Er hat es nämlich nicht geschafft die dunkle Seite fern zu halten aus der Entwicklung Ben Solos. Er verzweifelt daran und sieht, dass das er glaubte besiegt zu haben erneut empor kommt (Erste Ordnung, Snoke...). Luke immer noch als Held darzustellen, nach all dem was ihm widerfahren ist, würde ich für viel schwieriger halten. Und vor allem für viel uninteressanter. Der sichere Weg wäre es gewesen, dass Luke zurück kommt als wäre nichts gewesen aber wozu dann die neuen Helden, wenn es auch good old Luke richten kann. Zudem wird er ja am Ende des Films doch noch zum mächtigen Helden. Ich glaube viele der von Dir beschriebenen Fans haben ein Problem damit zu akzeptieren, dass man sich entschlossen hat die alte Garde auszusortieren. Sie waren toll aber jetzt muss Platz für die neuen Helden geschaffen werden. Und deren Geschichte ist eben ein bisschen anders. Da ist ein zweifelnder Bösewicht. Ein Oberschurke, der überraschend schon jetzt starb. Wer hätte das gedacht? Das kann man doof finden oder eben spektakuläre, weil es so nicht erwartet wurde. Das Problem ist die Sichtweise. Macht da jemand alles kaputt an was ich glaubte was richtig ist? Dann sitze ich wie Luke auf der Insel und verzweifle daran. Oder erkenne ich, dass aus dem unsicheren Neuen etwas viel interessanteres entstehen kann, was die ST jetzt endlich vom Ballast befreit, den sie bisher mit sich trug und der im Vergleich mit der OT nur ein Abklatsch sein kann.

Ich glaube RJ hat sich extrem mit Luke beschäftigt und ich finde die Wandlung - gerade nachdem ich noch einmal alle 8 Filme vorher gesehen hatte - sehr plausiebel. Was zeigt der Film hier. Ersteinmal etwas sehr menschliches: "du stellst dich deinen Dämonen nicht einmal und hast sie besiegt, du musst dich ihnen wieder und wieder stellen". Luke wird hier offensichtlich schwach - wie jemand der wieder mit dem Rauchen anfängt. Ihm huscht eine moralische Sichtweise durch den Kopf die mit dem Jedi-Orden nicht vereinbar ist, nämlich eine utilitaristische Denkweise:Wäre es nicht tatsächlich besser einen potenziellen Massenmörder zu töten, bevor er die Möglichkeit dazu bekommt? Da muss man sich nur mal den frömmsten Mann mit Zeitmaschine vorstellen; einen Pazifisten und Tugendhaften, der an dem Kindesbett eines Tyrannen steht (meinetwegen Hitler). Ich finde es plausiebel zu glauben, dass er zumindest kurz den Gedanken hat es einfach zu tun - weil er weiß dass es verdammt unwahrscheinlich wird ihn von der Zukunft abzuhalten. Wir würden wahrscheinlich alle kaum zögern. Und Luke sieht ja seine Zukunft (was übrigens nochmal das Problem der selbsterfüllenen Prophezeihung eröffnet). Nunja und Luke wird, wie völlig nachvollziehbar, kurz schwach und denkt darüber nach es zu tun. Und er stellt sich als Person danach völlig in Frage - er weiß dass er nicht mehr das ist wofür er sich gehalten hat. Das er überheblich geworden ist. Er stellt alles in Frage und zieht sich damit völlig nachvollziehbar zurück. Ich finde das eine tolle und spannende entwicklung - das sage ich als Luke Fan.

Ich freue mich für dich, dass du zu denjenigen gehörst, für die der Film funktioniert. Dass die Darstellung von Luke objektiv unlogisch oder unpassend ist, habe ich auch gar nicht geschrieben. Sie ist nicht für jeden nachvollziehbar. Mutig wäre es von RJ gewesen, wenn er Lukes Gesinnungswandel plausibel erklärt hätte. Genau das fehlt. Unerwartet ist wie RJ mit Luke umgeht. Als ob er sich mit dem Charakter nur am Rande beschäftigt hat.

ich finde es schon verwunderlich, wie oft hier scheinbar der ot-luke doch idealisiert wird, um einen angeblichen kontrast zum lj luke zu konstruieren. für den sohn von anakin skywalker / darth vader, war das ganze leben eine gradwanderung, immer mit den persönlichen dämonen bzw der last des erbes seines vaters im nacken. man darf doch nicht vergessen, dass luke auch am ende von jedi sehr stark mit sich kämpfen musste und kurz davor war, vader doch zu töten. nur dieser eine lichte moment, als er seine verlorene hand betrachtet, wendete dann doch letzlich alles wieder. insofern sehe ich nicht den geringsten widerspruch in der charakterentwicklung, sondern halte es für sehr ot-treu.

Ich tue mir wirklich schwer, der positiven Beurteilung zu folgen, RJ hätte sich in TLJ so super viel tolles neues einfallen lassen. Das waren doch größtenteils wiederkehrende Elemente aus früheren Star Wars Filmen, plus noch dazugeklautes aus anderen Fantasy Filmen wie "Herr der Ringe".

Ich könnte im Gegenteil behaupten, dass genauso wie manchen Kritikern vorgeworfen wird, sie würden dem Film keine Chance geben wollen und alles schlecht machen, so ist die Pro-TLJ-Fraktion genauso zwanghaft unterwegs, den Film unbedingt gut finden zu wollen, komme was wolle.

Schöne Ausführungen zu Luke und seinen Entscheidungen. Ich finde den Gedanken auch sehr interessant, dass Luke zwar Vader retten konnte, jedoch bei Ben nicht so viel Hoffnung hegt und denkt, er könne nicht auch gerettet werden. Vielleicht hätte er diese Hoffnung ja sogar gehabt, aber mal ehrlich. Für Anakin war es die Erlösung, dass Luke an ihn bis zu letzt geglaubt hat. Aber nichts von den Gräueltaten Darth Vaders wurde dadurch rückgängig gemacht. Und die Galaxis leidet ja bis zum Zeitpunkt der ST weiterhin aufgrund der Konsequenzen die sich aus Anakins Abfall nach wie vor ergeben. Außerdem zeigt TLJ ja auch, dass Luke sich doch noch entschied seinen Neffen nicht zu erschlagen, doch Ben wachte auf und sah die Gefahr, und dann war es zu spät. Ich bin absolut zufrieden mit dieser Auflösung.

Ist auch ein schöner Reim. In RotJ will Luke zuschlagen und tut es dann doch nicht, was seinen Vater rettet. In den flashbacks zu TLJ will Luke Ben erschlagen, zögert dann aber doch, nur Bens Wandlung zum Bösen wird damit endgültig besiegelt. Great!

@darth mongo: Ich vermute mal, RJ hätte die alten Helden gar nicht erst mitspielen lassen, wenn er verantwortlich gewesen wäre bei den Entscheidungen vor EP7. Aber Du hast wohl Recht. Der Film steht und fällt damit, ob man sich reinfühlen kann in Luke und seine Motive. Und für manche fällt er eben auch, weil sie einen Film nach gewohntem Strickmuster erwarteten. Das ist aber auch okay. Ich sehe mehr und mehr die Chance in diesem Vorgehen, dass sich Star Wars nicht mit den übergroßen alten Helden in die Zukunft schleppen muss und die Leute ständig Vergleiche anstellen werden, weil die neuen Helden nicht so toll sind wie früher. Nein, Kylo ist kein Darth Vader 2.0 aber erst jetzt ist er offenbar so richtig böse geworden. Nein Rey ist offenbar keine Skywalker und sie kann trotzdem eine Jedi sein. Snoke ist doch nicht der Oberbösewicht sondern er wurde nur gebraucht, damit sich Kylo weiterentwickelt. Was, das kann doch gar nicht sein? Doch!

Was mir auch aufgefallen ist beim Thema Luke ist, dass wohl viele ein Problem damit haben, die noch den alten EU Luke im Kopf haben und immer noch nicht damit klar kommen das Lucasfilm das EU zu den Akten gelegt hat. Intressant ist dabei, das nicht mal George Lucas das EU anerkannt hat, was aber von vielen unter den Teppich gekehrt wird. Tatsächlich fiel mir in einer kurzen Recherche noch mal auf, dass von Anfangan falsch Informationen verbreitet wurden und damit eine große Disney Ablehnung entstand, die von einigen wenigen Meinungsmachern angeführt werden, die immer wieder auftauchen, (inklusive Facebook Group und absichtliche Spoiler Aktionen um Filme schlecht zu machen). Dabei waren es Kathleen Kennedy und Paplo Hidalgo die diesen Schritt mit der Story Group in die Wege leiteten. Intressanterweise wurde das auch hier auf STU korrekt wiedergegeben und seltsamerweise wird immer noch auf Disney als Erzbösewicht eingeschlagen:

Ja sicher, er entwickelt die Charaktere weiter. Eigentlich alle Charaktere. Und das tut er sehr gut. Aber davon sprach ich nicht.
Nachdem ich jetzt eine Nacht über die Diskussionen geschlafen habe, komme ich zu einem weiteren Fazit:
- Der Film biete mir einige Lacher und einige Augenroll-Momente,
- Er bietet mit auch sehr viele magische Momente. Momente zum Mitfühlen, Mitfiebern, Mitdenken.
- Zu keinem Zeitpunkt kommt bei mir das Gefühl der Langeweile oder Genervtheit auf. Im Gegensatz zu TFA, RO und der PT.
- Ich sehe in jedem Charakter eine sinnvolle und wichtige Weiterentwicklung und die neuen Charaktere gefallen mir auch sehr.
- Und deswegen habe ich viel Spaß an dem Film. Kratzt durch seine Stärken an einem dramaturgischen Meisterwerk, kommt da aber wegen seinen Schwächen (falscher Humor in falschen Momenten) nicht ganz hin.
ABER
Er entwickelt das Universum nur sehr zaghaft weiter. Er bringt die Saga und das Franchise im Großen und Ganzen nicht auf eine neue Stufe sondern erweitert lediglich die jetzige um ein paar Aspekte.
Das erwarte ich allerdings auch nicht von jedem Star Wars Film. Von einer Saga-Trilogie im Gesamten allerdings schon. Denn so wie ich das Saga-KOnzept verstanden habe, ist dies ein wesentliches Kernmerkmal des Ganzen. Die Saga erzählt die Geschichtem, die galaxisweite Verwerfungen und Umwälzungen mit sich bringen, was die Skywalker blutlinie ja erst zu etwas besonderem macht, da diese Veränderungen von Ihnen ausgelöst werden. Wenn das aber nicht stattfindet, kann man die Existenzberechtigung in Frage stellen. Die ST spannt zwar ein wenig den Bogen zur PT aber das ist mir noch zu wenig.
Hätte Johnson weniger Zeit damit verbracht, vermeintlich witzige Momente zu schaffen und stattdessen mehr Energie darin investiert aus den neuen Ansätzen mehr Handfestes zu machen und ihnen einen stabilen Background zu geben, dann hätte der Film möglicherweise sogar mit TESB auf Augenhöhe sein können.
Um mal den Vergleich zu ziehen:
Die OT hat viele gute Ideen und setzt sie größtenteils grandios um.
Die PT hat viele gute Ideen und setzt sie größtenteils miserabel um.
DIe ST hat viele gute Ideen und setzt davon bislang zu wenig um.
Viele enttäuschte Erwartungen bauten ja um Wesentlichen darauf auf, dass TFA viele Fragen stellt und keine Antworten liefert und zu dem die Trailer in eine ganz andere Richtung hindeuteten.
Wie gesagt, find ich den Film für sich genommen genial. Aber im Gesamten kann er mir nicht das Gefühl nehmen, dass etwas Wichtiges noch fehlt. Und die Zweifel daran, ob Episdoe 9 das noch bringen kann, sind auch berechtigt. Nicht nur wegen Abrams sondern auch weil man sich fragen muss, ob eine Episode noch dazu ausreicht. Du hast es ja selbst geschrieben. Nach 2/3 ist eine Trilogie so gut wie vorbei.
Ich weiß, dass wir alle mittlerweile wissen, dass es im Hintergrund kein wirkliches Konzept gab. Das Problem ist aber dennoch vorhanden, dass man den Filmen diese mangelhafte Konzeption an einigen Punkten deutlich anmerkt. Und daran kann man sich stören.
Aber nur um das nochmal herauszustellen: Ich finde den Film trotzuden genial unterhaltsam. Es macht ihn nur nicht zu dem Meisterwerk, der er hätte sein können und der er in manchen Momenten wiederum scheint zu sein. Und das ist bedauernswert.

Na gut, auf einer Fanseite ist klar, dass Kritiker runtergemacht und als Unwissende und Hasser dargestellt werden. Damit muss man wohl rechnen, da Fans fanatisch und irrational und maßlos verteidigen, was längst verloren ist.
Ja, das funktioniert in beide Richtungen, lieber GWL. Es wurden genug SACHLICHE Kritikpunkte auf den vielen Seiten genannt, von Anschlussfehlern über unglaubhafte Charakterentwicklungen bis hin zu technischen Details oder offensichtlichen Plotproblemen. Irrational? Maßlos? Eher nicht. Nur andere Auffassungen, Beobachtungen, Interpretationen. Und zwar von weniger Fan(atischen)-Zuschauern.

In einem vorherigen Post hatte ich geschrieben, dass ich die Gschichte von Luke genau so gerne als Film gesehen hätte. Jedi Akademie, Zerstörung etc. Aber das werden wir nie mehr im Kino präsentiert bekommen. Anstatt dessen gibt es einige Flashbacks, die uns Lukes Gesinnungswandel erklären sollen. Plausibiltät in Lichtgeschwindigkeit sozusagen. Ob das wirklich sein muss ist fraglich.
Nichts Persönliches, aber mein Username hat für mich eine tiefe Bedeutung.

Du beschreibst genau das, was im Film leider nicht erklärt wird. Hätte RJ es so erklärt, wäre es sogar nachvollziehbar. Das ist nicht nur das Problem von EP 8, sondern vonder ST im Allgemeinen.

Wenn ich an den alten EU-Luke denke dann bekomme ich Schüttelfrost vor lauter negativer Gefühle die dann wieder hochkommen. Die Autoren hatten damals einen solchen Tunnelblick was seine Entwicklung angeht und die des Jedi-Ordens allgemein. Uninspiriert, langweilig, vorhersehbar. Das sind die Schlagworte die mir dazu nur einfallen.

Vor allem müsste es jetzt wieder einen positiven Einfluss der Linie auf die Galaxis geben. Vader war Fluch, Luke Segen. Kylo wird zunehmend zum Tyrannen dieser Generation, ABER der Film deutet an, dass andere Personen wie Rey (die keine Skywalker ist) oder die machtsensitiven Kinder die neue Hoffnung sind. Da würde die Blutlinie unterm Strich nicht gut wegkommen. Darüber muss JJ unbedingt nachdenken, wenn er entscheidet was aus Kylo wird und ob er bei Rey die bedeutungslosen Eltern bestätigen will.

Nun, da Du diese Vergleiche so sehr magst, hier noch einer.
Habe mir gestern (zum Trost) nochmal Rogue One angeschaut. Den fand ich bisher nur "ganz okay". Nach TLJ finde ich RO großartig!
In diesem Sinne, vielen Dank RJ, dass Du durch Deine "Arbeit" den Film eines Kollegen aufgewertet hast!
Nachtrag: Dein "Luke + Melk-Kuh" ist natürlich korrekterweise das Äquivalent zu "Disney und die Fanbase".

Das Rey keine Skywalker ist, steht ja nun nicht in Stein gemeißelt. Ich weiß auch nicht wie man da drauf kommen kann, Kylos Worte für bare Münze zu nehmen. Erstens drückt er sich selbst eigentlich nur vage aus und zweitens macht die Szenerie deutlich, dass das was er sagt zumindest nicht die Wahrheit sein muss. Das kann Abrams noch gestalten wie er will.. Ähnlich ist es mit den Kindern. Klar, eine neue Hoffnung bedeutet in SW immer, dass es eine Gruppe von Kindern gibt, die machtsensitiv sind und denen jemand beibringen muss, diese Macht für das Gute zu nutzen. Das kann hier aber auch symbolische Aussagekraft haben. Ich glaube nicht, dass Abrams diesen Wink so direkt aufgreift.
Aber worin ich dir zustimme ist, dass man sich ernsthafte Gedanken machen muss, wo man mit der Skywalkerlinie hin will und dies muss gut erzählt werden. Will man sie in Episode 9 enden lassen um mit Rey etwas neues zu etablieren? Das könnte mir sogar gefallen. Aber ich zweifel daran, dass man derartig mutig sein wird..Wenn Kylo nun ein neues Imperium aufbaut und Rey eine neue Rebellion, Republik oder einen Jedi-ORden auf die Beine stellt wäre es für mich enttäuschend. Zruzeit scheint allerdings alles darauf hinauszulaufen.
